Your Pontoon Boat and Salt Water Use

If your boat is in daily contact with salt water, remove it from the water regularly and flush it from top to bottom with fresh water. Hardware should be flushed, cleaned and sprayed with a marine corrosion inhibitor after every use if possible.

 Painting

Anti-Fouling paint should be used if you run in your boat in salt water and should be checked regularly for chips or scratches in the paint. Some anti-fouling paints reacts adversely with aluminum. Do not use paints or primer containing copper, mercury, or lead on aluminum boats. For more information contact your local dealer

 Corrosion

Modern boat building techniques minimize corrosion problems; never the less, galvanic corrosion can occur when dissimilar metals come in contact with salt water.

Stray current corrosion occurs when an electrical current leaves a metal protector for a water path, causing rapid corrosion. Although we have used high quality marine grade aluminum to build your boat, we recommend that you take the following precautions to prevent corrosion.

  1. Regularly rinse your boats aluminum with fresh water.
  2. Zinc anodes should be installed on your aluminum pontoons at the dealership, these should be installed below water level on the transducer brackets, your boat engine should already be equipped with them. Inspect the zinc anodes frequently for deterioration. A sacrificial anode will deteriorate before the metal it protects. If the zinc anode erodes 50% or more, replace it to continue protection against corrosion; otherwise, other metal parts may be damaged.
  3. Regularly inspect metal components that are in contact with the water. Look for pitting or a lacy appearance to the metal. If you see damage, inspect all wiring for break or loose connections.
  4.  Use a wood or rubber gasket when mounting non-aluminum fixtures or hardware to aluminum. Never use the aluminum on your boat as ground for electrical circuits. To make sure accessories are properly grounded, run the ground to the negative of the battery.
  5. Do not reverse polarity on any electrical device. If you install additional accessories, always maintain the integrity of the two-wire system. Observing this precaution also provides against high voltage damage during an electrical storm.
  6. All electrical wire connectors especially bellow the deck should be watertight head shrink connections.

Note: There is often danger of electric current in the water near shore power.

 Trailering

Boats should not be stored on trailers with salt-water soaked carpet and wood bunks. If it is possible a roller style would be better suited for salt or brackish water. Always rinse boat and trailer thoroughly when removing from salt water.

Remember:  An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
